Scenic World Blue Mountains

A Sky-High Breathtaking Experience

Offering Unique Views of The Three Sisters

Scenic World at Katoomba, NSW offers something for everyone, from thrilling rides to serene walks, all set in the natural beauty of the Blue Mountains. Family-owned since 1945, Scenic World has become an iconic attraction for visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed area. The main attraction is the Scenic Railway, the world’s steepest passenger railway, which descends into the Jamison Valley, offering exhilarating views of the lush rainforest.

The Scenic Cableway transports guests smoothly to the valley floor while providing panoramic views of the valley, cliffs, and surrounding mountains. The Scenic Skyway is another highlight, with a glass-floored cabin that soars 270 meters above the valley, allowing visitors to get a bird’s-eye view of the Three Sisters, Katoomba Falls, and the vast wilderness. Scenic Walkway, a 2.4-kilometre elevated boardwalk through the ancient rainforest allows visitors to discover the local flora and fauna.

Combining Nature, Adventure and Stunning Views

Scenic World offers experiences that can’t be found anywhere else in the world. Each attraction takes advantage of the amazing views, across valleys of pristine rainforest, rugged escarpment, distant horizons and of course the iconic Three Sisters rock formations.

Scenic Cableway is the steepest aerial cable car in the Southern Hemisphere with an incline of 36°, taking guests from treetop to clifftop, close to the sheer sandstone cliffs. The glass-roofed Scenic Railway is in the Guinness Book of World Records as the steepest passenger railway in the world with an incline of 52°. The railway tracks were formally used to transport coal from the mine through the cliff tunnel.

Scenic Skyway opened in 1958 as Australia's first cable car and is today the largest aerial cable car in the Southern Hemisphere and at 270 metres above the ground, is an incredible way to enjoy the Jamison Valley views.

A Sky-High Breathtaking Experience

From Coal Mine to Tourist Attraction

Scenic Railway was built in 1878 and used for transporting coal from the mine. When the Katoomba Colliery closed in 1945, local entrepreneur Harry Hammon saw an opportunity to convert the old coal skips and existing rail track into a passenger train, a recreational ride for tourists. He wanted to provide visitors with a unique way of seeing this incredible part of the country. In doing so, he created the world’s steepest passenger train, a record which still stands today.

Today, Scenic World is still owned and operated by the Hammon family who are proud to provide these unique experiences to over one million visitors a year. They come from all over the world to ride the Scenic Railway (the world’s steepest railway) and the Scenic Cableway (the steepest cable car in the Southern Hemisphere). They ride Scenic Skyway and wander along Scenic Walkway - one of the longest elevated boardwalks in Australia all while enjoying the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains.
