Tamworth is located 413 kilometres from Sydney and 566 kilometres from Brisbane. Travelling via the delightful New England Highway, Tamworth makes an ideal stopover for holidaymakers travelling between the two major cities.
The Kamilaroi/Gomeroi people are the traditional owners of the Tamworth region. Their traditional lands are thought to extend from the Upper Hunter Valley to southern Queensland, and from the Great Dividing Range to the Walgett area.
Tamworth is named after the town of Tamworth in Staffordshire, England. The name was chosen because Sir Robert Peel, the British Prime Minister at the time, represented Tamworth in Parliament. The town appeared on the map in 1837 and was proclaimed a town in 1850 with a population of around 250 people.
