Jindabyne is a popular alpine town on the banks of stunning Lake Jindabyne. Although it’s situated on the edge of the Snowy Mountains, just a short drive from the famous NSW ski resorts, Jindabyne is a pretty place to visit no matter what the season. In the warmer months, people take the trip to Jindabyne to breathe in the crisp mountain air.
It’s the perfect weather for hiking, mountain biking, or a guided horseback ride through the mountains. Take a boat out onto the lake or a drive to spot some of the beautiful flowers in bloom. In winter, Jindabyne becomes a hive of activity; a bustling hub for skiers and snowboarders heading to the nearby resorts at Perisher, Thredbo or Charlotte Pass.
The original township of Jindabyne was perched on the banks of the Snowy River. Settled in the 1840s, it served as the main river crossing for cattle travelling between the Monaro and Gippsland areas. The Jindabyne Hotel was built in 1860 following a gold rush at Crackenback. In 1893, a bridge was built over the river and Jindabyne continued to thrive.
1959 marked a turning point for the 250 residents as they started preparing for the relocation of their town to higher ground. Lake Jindabyne was to be filled as part of The Snowy Mountains Scheme and the creation of the Jindabyne Dam. A few houses were moved, but most were demolished and new houses built.
A symbolic and moving ceremony was held on December 19, 1964, when the townsfolk crossed the old bridge one last time. By 1967, the waters started to rise creating the beautiful Lake Jindabyne.
A Jindabyne holiday wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Thredbo. You don’t need to hit the slopes to take in the delights of this popular destination. Just 34 kilometres from Jindabyne, Thredbo is renowned as Australia’s best summer and winter alpine resort.
The Kosciuszko Express Chairlift transports guests and visitors up the slopes to the aptly named Eagles Nest Restaurant. At 1937 metres, it’s Australia’s highest restaurant, serving delicious meals and breathtaking 270-degree views of the Thredbo Valley.

Jindabyne is located in the Snowy Mountains, which are part of the Australian Alps. It’s one of the highest settlements of its size in Australia, at 918 metres above sea level.
Before European settlement in the early 19th century, the Ngarigo, Walgalu and Southern Ngunnawal peoples lived in the area. They hunted game, fished the waters and made tools from the river rocks.
The name Jindabyne comes from an Aboriginal word meaning valley.
