The Great Ocean Road, 100 kilometres from Melbourne is one of Australia’s most iconic stretches of road. By far the best way to experience the wonders of this magnificent coastline is to take to the skies on a 12 Apostles scenic flight. There are many options, from modern class aircraft to a WWII vintage biplane, or luxury helicopter.
The advantage of a helicopter flight is they take off and land right at the 12 Apostles so there’s no time wasted flying (or driving) to and from the airport. Of course, another reason to choose a helicopter flight is they can fly much lower, taking guests closer to all the wonders of the amazing Great Ocean Road.

One of the most popular flights is from the 12 Apostles to the Bay of Islands. This 90-kilometre, 25-minute flight takes guests soaring over nine spectacular landmarks - The 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge, The Sentinel, The Arch, London Bridge, The Grotto, Schomberg Reef, Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands, returning to the 12 Apostles.
This sensational flight passes over some of Victoria’s most stunning coastal landscapes, from dramatic cliffs with pounding waves to pristine bays with fascinating rock formations. Between June and September, you might be lucky enough to spot the majestic Southern Right Whales.
The Great Ocean Road stretching 242 from Torquay to Allansford, just out of Warrnambool has a long and proud history. In the early 1900s, the road was built by workers including more than 3000 returned servicemen. Construction commenced in 1919 and was completed in 1932 under extremely difficult coastal working and living conditions.
It serves as a memorial to Victoria's First World War servicemen and women as a lasting and precious reminder of their war service and the Australian community’s appreciation for their sacrifice. The 242-kilometre road is now known as the longest war memorial in the world.
The Great Ocean Road was also built to serve a practical purpose -to provide residents and tourists access to this spectacular piece of Victorian coastline with its extraordinary panoramas, adjacent countryside and unique flora and fauna. In 2011 it was added to the Australian National Heritage List in recognition of its historic and natural significance.
There are three Helicopter flights from the 12 Apostles. The return flight to the London Bridge takes 15 minutes. The popular Bay of Islands return flight is 25 minutes and to cover the Shipwreck Coast from the 12 Apostles to the Cape Otway Lighthouse is a one-hour return flight.
The best time to see the Southern Right Whales on their migration is Between June and October. From the air, you may even spot calves swimming beside their mothers. Orcas sometimes join the whales on their journey, along with pods of seals, dolphins and tuna.
There’s really no ‘right time’ for a thrilling helicopter ride over the 12 Apostles. The summer sun brings out the amazing colours of the limestone formations, while winter brings a host of coastal waterfalls, a delight to witness from the air. It’s a magical place all year round.
