Where it all began

The Sandalwood Shop was originally known as Mt Romance when the Albany distillery was established in 1997. Mt Romance pioneered the distillation and use of Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum) in the fragrance industry. It introduced Australian Sandalwood oil to the aromatherapy, cosmetics, and therapeutic markets internationally, carving out a niche for Australian Sandalwood oil as a natural, sustainable, and healing ingredient.

In 2008, Mt Romance became a part of Quintis, the world’s largest producer of natural sandalwood products, and started distilling oil from Sandalwood Album, the finest sandalwood species, which is also known as Santalum album.

Mt Romance changed its name to The Sandalwood Shop in 2020. Today, Quintis owns and manages the world's largest Indian Sandalwood plantation covering 12,000 hectares in northern Australia and their much sought out Indian and Australian Sandalwood products continue to be manufactured in-house under its own brand and the much-loved Mt Romance range.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sandalwood?

Highly valued for centuries, sandalwood is said to be one of the most expensive woods in the world. The woods are heavy, yellow-brown to red in colour, and fine-grained, and unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades.

Sandalwood obtains its value from the heartwood - dense inner part of the trunk containing the elixir, as well as its butt, and major branches. The distinctive sandalwood oil is extracted from the woods for use.

What is Sandalwood used for?

Australian Sandalwood is a relaxing, calming essential oil that can assist with sleeping and meditation. It has grounding qualities that can bring stillness to the mind and improve mental clarity. Sandalwood oil has also been known to be a gentle aphrodisiac.

Sandalwood Album is used as a remedy for many ailments including digestive problems, the common cold, and urinary tract infections.

Where is Sandalwood grown?

There are 15 different species of sandalwood in the world, the most popular being Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album) and Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum.)

Each species has its own distinct aromatic profile and can be found growing in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Indonesia, Australia, Hawaii, and other Pacific Islands.

Australian Sandalwood grows in the arid central west of the country. Indian Sandalwood which Quintis planted in 1997 from seeds originating from Mysore in India, is grown in the sub-tropical north of Australia.
